The Secret of Successful

Promoting Work-Life & Employee Assistance "EAP" Programs

In this day and age, employees are bombarded with information - much of which they have little interest in or time to read.

But for Work-Life Managers and Employee Assistance Program ("EAP") Directors, it is critical to get your program’s message across. Letting employees know on a day-to-day basis that “help is available to them” is crucial.

Aside from brown bag luncheons, introductory seminars, global e-mailing and other modalities - there are limited ways to reach employees daily.

The most popular communication initiative in the workplace is the poster or banner. Customized work/life or EAP posters (www.eaposters.com) can benefit employees by increasing program awareness - daily. They are also a clear reminder to the employer that the program is present and working.

Posters are one of the few visible signs employers have that the funds they spend are being put to good use. That message alone is critical for program renewal. After all, if a program is top-notch, but no one knows about it or uses it - it won't be renewed.

There are several important rules for workplace communication materials, especially posters. First, they need to be well designed, clean, colorful and simple. Second, they need to be supplied monthly in sufficient quantities AND in the right languages. Be certain to check with the company you serve to determine whether English is the only language or if Spanish and other languages are prominent. Often we provide posters in Spanish, German, French (especially for our Canadian clients) and Portuguese.

Third, they need to be seen to be effective – meaning, purchase the largest sizes the client company can accommodate OR purchase two sizes - one to use as flyers in many areas (say an 8.5x11 size) and a few larger sizes for introductory impact. Larger sizes, from 11 x 17 to 24 x 36, can be used in hallways or at health fairs - they're real attention getters and work wonders promoting underutilized programs.

Also, EAP posters need to be sensitive to diversity issues – such as nationality and race. The latter can be avoided altogether with neutral images – such as flowers, etc. In addition, be sure the message is simple. No one has time to read a paragraph walking down the hall – so a few well-placed words – work best.

Customize your posters. In addition to adding your program’s name and telephone numbers – consider adding your website address. Some employees prefer to visit on-line first – before calling the program. Don’t forget to add a special touch to your posters by adding logos – your program’s logo and sometimes your client’s logo too!

Customized EAP posters and work/life posters help make programs successful, keep clients happy and reach employees every day at their workplace. They can create an image of the program and help encourage employees reluctant to call to “reach out.” They are mighty workplace messengers!
